I understand why you look at the ground. (Any snakes in Virginia? I remember a few in Alabama).
Does look like a bird. A chat-huant, (literally howling cat) a small owl.
Yes! I grew up in the Great Dismal Swamp, which is literally crawling with poisonous snakes. They are pretty much everywhere, and as a kid, I couldn’t imagine running through the woods without keeping an eye on the trail at all times.
I love owls, particularly the little ones. Always have. 🙂 They strike me as quite otherworldly.
They are. And so cute. (The little owls) But in Europe they’re almost extinct. Too many pesticides. And about snakes, I’ve seen my fair share in Africa, but also in the woods in the South. I too keep an eye on the trail. 🙂
Just looked the “Swamp”. fabulous. You should write about it. (Photos please). (made a mental note about the place. Might include it in a story. Thanks for the tip)
AWF, your pictures always seem to speak your mind with the world. Good stuff. Always makes me think about what is on my mind.

Jeff, that’s just the best. Can’t think of a better use for the little things I share here — truly.
Thanks for making me smile! 🙂

Stunning. I had to look twice to see what it was.

I know, right?! Funny, the little visions hidden inside ordinary things. 🙂

Well I thought it was a pig’s nose. Perhaps this vegetarian is in denial.

Ah, I love that you read up on it! It’s a truly ethereal place. Somber, but hauntingly beautiful. And so outrageously wild and green. 🙂
I miss it often.
It would make a *great* setting for a short story. 🙂

Absolutely so. I’ve made a note of it. Might spark some inspiration, who knows. 😉

PS. And how long did you live there? SO interesting.

I spent my entire childhood there, until I left for college. You can see the personality of the place in my aesthetic even now. 🙂

Amazing. So walking in the woods in Virginia is almost too hard a ground? lacks water? (Do you have any pictures from that time?)

The ground where I live now is, actually, fairly stony and hard (especially in winter)! The bones of the mountains are always just under the soil.
At home in the swamp, there’s hardly any ground at all! Just water, water, water … About two to four feet deep for miles on end.
I’ll have to dig up some pictures sometime … They are sure to be somewhere. 🙂
